now back from vacation. more specifically about the former nebraska law maker chuck hagel and the reports he will be picked as early as tomorrow as the secretary of defense choice to replace leon panetta by the president. the white house has been mum, said nothing more specifically about that. there have been a lot of rumblings about this. it would be a contentious nomination battle, as we noted on the sunday morning shows, for a variety of reasons. for one, we heard from senator lindsey graham of south carolina today, who said, among other things, that chuck hagel was, quote, out of the mainstream on foreign policy issues and said, in reference to the potential that he would be picked, for the president it would be what he called an in your face selection, saying that it was just more -- a greater effort to get sort of up against the republicans and to continue the battle lines as they have already been drawn. that goes specifically, lindsey graham's concerns, to some past comments that chuck hagel had made about israel. he referred to the jewish lobby that offended some
. but first, the battle is ratcheting up today over chuck hagel's nomination as defense secretary. here's former secretary of state colin powell on "meet the press." >> i think he gets confirmed. i think ultimately he's superbly qualified based on his overall record, based on his service to the country, based on how he feels about troops and veterans and families. i think he will do a great job as secretary of defense. and i think in his confirmation hearings all of these issues that you've raised, that others have raised, he'll be prepared to deal with. >> also new today, senator john mccain offering new insight into his concern about this nomination. >> what is his view of america's role in the world? whether he really believes that the surge was the worst blunder since the vietnam war. that clearly is not -- that's not correct. i mean, in fact, it's bizarre. why would he oppose calling the iranian revolutionary guard a terrorist organization? these are legitimate questions that need to be asked. i honor his service. we are friends. but i have an obligation to the men and women who ar
it clear about some of these nominations such as jack lew and chuck hagel made it clear they were going to adamantly oppose the nominations if he made them. he went ahead and made them. it leads me to think he is trying to put out as many fights as he can put out there and hope he wins half of them and then he would call it a day. it has set up an amazingly ar arched rivalry in washington. >> critics would say the president has nothing to lose he won the second term and he can put out there whatever he wants if he gets it he gets it if he doesn't, he doesn't. meantime issues like the debt ceiling and gun control are he shall issues they say they may act unilaterally on. where does that leave the american people? >> i think those critics who say that about president obama's strategy they are probably right. president obama has a strong hand he has a better hand in washington than republicans do. the problem with things like gun control; in the senate even modern democrats join with republicans. if he tries to do something unilateral with debt ceiling or with guns the fight we are seeing
reluctantly adopted that and it succeeded. senator hagel called it the biggest blunder since the vietnam war. >> someone that holds mourdock-esque. >> send you back to vietnam. >> let's get right to our panel now. the second hour of the cycle. i'm joined by krystal ball and toure who love to eat up my time period on this network. >> what's wrong with that? >> absolutely. i'm accepting you'll soon do that. krystal, we've heard just now about the resignation of hilda solis. it's just been announced. the president has responded and accepted her resignation. but how much does this resignation put pressure on him in terms of the diversity issues with his cabinet? because he's already been criticized for a lack of diversity. now we've lost another woman. >> his cabinet is looking pretty brotastic. it bothers me. >> i think it bothers a lot of people. >> i give the president credit. he has more women in his cabinet than say george w. bush. but. >> of course he did nominate two supreme court judges who are women. >> and we vould remember his first choice for secretary of state was susan rice, a woma
of people, new c.i.a. guy, brennan and hagel to be his defense secretary. we've talked in the past a little bit about brennan's problems. it's very clear that hagel could actually be the most divisive nomination fight in the senate since, what was it, 20 years ago when president george herbert walker bush nominated tower for defense secretary. >>brian: he didn't get it. >>steve: he absolutely did not get it. the conventional wisdom is hagel will probably sail through eventually. he won't get borked. but why did the president pick this guy when he could picked somebody like michelle flourney who would be the first female secretary of defense who everybody likes a lot. >>gretchen: who is that? >>brian: she's been in the pentagon. >>gretchen: i never heard her name as an option. for me, there's two reasons why this will not be a problem for chuck hagel in the long run. first of all, are the american people paying attention to this? i mean, i think if you could get the american people involved and they start representatives and say i have a problem with this or i light chuck hagel, then it beco
posts, a former republican senator chuck hagel for defense secretary and counterterrorism advisor john brennan to the helm the cia. they appeared with obama on monday at the white house. >> am also grateful for opportunity to help continue to strengthen our country and our alliances. in advance global freedom, decency, humanity. as we help build a better world for all mankind. i will always do my best for our country, for those are represented at the pentagon, and for all our citizens. >> if confirmed as director, i will make my mission to ensure the cia has the tools it needs to keep our nation safe and that its work always reflects the liberties, the freedoms, and the values that we hold so dear. >> senator hagel has faced criticism from rightwing foes over his positions on israel and dealing with iran, as well as from progressive critics for making day -- denigrating comments in 1998 about gays in government, for which only recently apologized. some democrats have joined republicans in opposing him over his refusal to back unconditional support for israeli government policies. on mo
